About

Mr Loganathan is a consultant colorectal surgeon at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Claremont Private Hospital.

Mr Loganathan qualified from the University of Edinburgh Medical School in 2000 (MBChB) and also completed an intercalated degree in Pharmacology (BSC Hons).

His surgical training was in the Yorkshire region. He spent 2 years in clinical research at St James’s University Hospital, Leeds. During this time, he was awarded a major funding with the Bert Inman Fellowship grant. His research into sepsis after surgery resulted in a number of international presentations and publications in high impact journals. This culminated in the award of a Doctor of Medicine degree (MD) from the University of Leeds. His higher surgical training was throughout the Yorkshire region at Hull, York, Bradford, Huddersfield and Leeds where he trained in all aspects of general and colorectal surgery.

At the end of his higher surgical training, Mr Loganathan was awarded the Ethicon Royal College of Surgeons Travel Grant and he completed 2 years of prestigious fellowships in leading colorectal surgery units in Australia.

His first year of fellowship training was at Flinders Medical Centre, Adelaide working with Professor David Wattchow and Mr Jim Sweeney where he gained specialist training in colorectal cancer surgery, particularly complex cases and recurrent cancers. He also gained broad experience in colorectal surgery for non cancer cases, hernias including large/complex incisional hernias, emergency surgery and advanced gynaecological malignancy. His second year of fellowship was at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Adelaide working with the pioneering laparoscopic surgeons Professor Peter Hewett and Mr Alex Karatasses. Mr Loganathan gained extensive experience in laparoscopic colorectal surgery for benign and cancer cases. He also gained wide experience in general colorectal surgery including new approaches for haemorrhoid surgery and published several research papers during this time.

Mr Arun Loganathan was awarded the iWantGreatCare certificate of excellence in 2022 for delivering outstanding care.

Current practice

Clinically, Mr Loganathan works at one of the largest colorectal units in the UK with a high volume of colorectal cancer and non-cancer cases. He is an accredited expert at minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery and performs a large number of these cases . His outcome data is amongst the best locally and nationally and can be accessed here.

He performs surgery for bowel disorders including colorectal cancer, diverticular disease and inflammatory bowel disease and approximately 80- 90% of these are performed laparoscopically.

Mr Loganathan is an experienced accredited endoscopist and performs colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy.

He offers modern treatments for haemorrhoids including haemorrhoidectomy and Doppler guided treatment (HALO). He has an interest in hernia surgery especially inguinal hernias and treats incisional, umbilical, femoral and all other ventral hernias.

Mr Loganathan is also one of a few surgeons in the UK fully trained in robotic colorectal surgery. Robotic surgery in the most advanced form of minimally invasive surgery which allows a surgeon to operate with a very high level of precision leading to improved outcomes.

Mr Loganathan performs robotic surgery using the da Vinci Xi System at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital primarily for patients with colorectal cancer.

Details of robotic surgery can be accessed here.

Mr Loganathan remains active in clinical research and is principal investigator for ongoing clinical trials. He has published a number of papers on a wide range of topics including hernia surgery, sepsis, haemorrhoid surgery, pilonidal sinus and faecal incontinence (list of publications below) He is also involved in teaching medical students and is a tutor for the University of Edinburgh Medical School Masters of Surgery Course.
